We are still searching for the correct immigration record of Daniel Kane from Ireland to the U.S.
The 1900 U.S. census record for Washington D.C. indicates Daniel Kane immigrated to the U.S. in 1856 and the 1910 U.S. census record for Washington D.C. indicates Daniel Kane immigrated to the U.S. in 1858.
There are several complications which contribute to the difficulty of finding the correct immigration record of Daniel Kane. The main difficulty is the fact that Daniel Kane could neither read nor write the English language as evidenced by his signing his name with an X on his will in Washington D.C. Daniel Kane was born in 1840 in County Cork, Ireland, making him 14 years younger than his wife, Catherine Hegarty, who he married in Washington D.C. in February of 1858. Also contributing to the difficulty of finding Daniel Kane’s immigration record is the tendency of persons who enumerated records, such as baptismal records, ship passenger records and census records, to spell and record information, such as names, when the person giving the information could not spell their name or give accurate information for birthdate, etc.
The most likely U.S. ports of immigration for Daniel Kane would be the ports of Boston, MA, New York, NY or Philadelphia, PA.
We have been searching the records of those three ports (Boston, New York and Philadelphia) with various spellings of the name and age for Daniel Kane. Although the 1910 U.S. census record for Washington D.C. indicates Daniel Kane immigrated to the U.S. in 1858, the 1858 year would be a low probability since Daniel Kane was married on 08 February 1858 in Washington D.C. Therefore, the most likely year of immigration for Daniel Kane would have been 1857 or earlier, although we have also searched records for the year 1858 too.
