Daniel Kane could not read and write the English language, yet, through his hard work, and with the assistance of his learned wife, Catherine Hegarty Kane, they lived a comfortable lifestyle in Georgetown, Washington, D.C.
Both Daniel Kane and his wife, Catherine Hegarty Kane, and their son, Dennis Joseph Kane, conducted real estate transactions in Georgetown and Washington, D.C.
One of the first real estate transactions of Daniel and Catherine Hegarty Kane was the purchase, in 1866, of the unimproved lot located at 58 Lingan Street, Georgetown, Washington, D.C. and which they titled in the name of Catherine (Hegarty) Kane, the wife of Daniel Kane. Daniel and Catherine Hegarty Kane built their brick home on this unimproved lot the same year they purchased it in 1866. The address of 58 Lingan Street was later renamed to the current address of 1419 36th Street, NW, Georgetown, Washington, D.C. When Catherine Hegarty Kane died in 1898, their two children, Dennis Joseph Kane and Mary Elizabeth Kane Thorn, deeded their inherited interest in the home at 1419 36th St. NW back to their father, Daniel Kane.
Daniel Kane, as a developer, would purchase unimproved lots, then he and his son, Dennis Joseph Kane, who was a master brick mason and a contractor, would build houses on the lots and sell them.
Below are a few of the houses owned by Daniel and Catherine Hegarty Kane, with the exception of 1412 35th Street, NW, Georgetown, Washington, D.C., which was the home of their daughter, Mary Elizabeth Kane Thorn, and her husband, William Daniel A Thorn. This was also the residence where Daniel Kane died on May 3, 1912:
